President Trump backs Saudi condemnation of attempted Mecca drone attack

President Donald Trump praised Saudi Arabia’s swift response to an alleged drone attack aimed at Mecca, calling the incident a clear “red line” that must not be crossed. The Saudi government accused Yemen’s Iran‑backed Houthi rebels of launching the unmanned aircraft toward the holy city, though the Houthis denied the claim.

Saudi response and regional condemnation

Saudi officials said their air defenses intercepted and destroyed the drone before it could enter Mecca’s airspace, protecting the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad. The kingdom, a key U.S. ally and the world’s largest oil exporter, declared the attempt an assault on the sanctity of holy sites and warned of further action if the threat persists.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed Saudi condemnation, stating that Pakistan stands “unwaveringly, shoulder to shoulder” with the kingdom. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation, representing more than 57 Muslim nations, also denounced the attack as a violation of the sanctity of holy places.

U.S. stance under President Trump

President Trump emphasized that the United States does not intend to become directly involved in the Saudi‑Houthi confrontation. “The Houthis called us, and they don’t want to fight with us,” he said, noting that the rebels appear focused on Saudi targets rather than U.S. interests.

Vice President J.D. Vance added that Washington has been in “constant contact” with Saudi officials and is maintaining direct communications with the Houthis to monitor the fluid situation. Both leaders stressed the importance of diplomatic channels while avoiding escalation.

Broader regional dynamics

The incident comes amid ongoing Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure, including a key pipeline that has reportedly been offline for weeks. Iran continues to target commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, keeping global oil prices above $100 a barrel.

A defense pact involving Saudi Arabia, NATO member Turkey and nuclear‑armed Pakistan remains dormant, as officials from Ankara and Islamabad confirmed they have not received a formal request for assistance. Turkish officials indicated that the alliance’s institutional framework still needs completion before it can become operational.

Houthis’ claims and verification

Later in the week, Houthi spokespeople asserted—without providing evidence—that they had shot down a Saudi‑led coalition F‑15 fighter jet over the central province of Marib. The claim could not be independently verified, and Saudi coalition representatives did not comment at the time of publication.

Iranian diplomat Abbas Araghchi, currently in China, is expected to discuss the broader conflict and shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz during his visit, underscoring the complex diplomatic landscape surrounding the Middle East’s oil corridors.

Implications for U.S. policy

President Trump’s measured response reflects a continued commitment to protecting American interests while avoiding direct military entanglement in the Saudi‑Iran proxy war. By supporting Saudi condemnation and maintaining open lines with both sides, the administration seeks to preserve regional stability and safeguard the flow of energy resources critical to the U.S. economy.
