EU Commission President von der Leyen Calls for Unity on Climate, AI and China Competition

Brussels – In a speech that underscores the importance of trans‑Atlantic cooperation, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament on Wednesday that the 27‑nation bloc must act as a single force to meet three of the most pressing challenges of our time: climate change, artificial intelligence and strategic competition from China.

Climate action and adaptation

Von der Leyen reminded lawmakers that Europe is already feeling the harshest effects of a warming planet, citing recent heat waves and wildfires that have scarred the continent. She pledged to keep the EU on an ambitious path to cut emissions while also stepping up adaptation measures, drawing on the lessons learned from the recent extreme weather events.

Artificial intelligence and jobs

The President warned that many citizens fear artificial intelligence could threaten jobs and cybersecurity. She argued that Europe must shape AI policy to protect workers, ensure data security and capture the economic benefits of the technology for European businesses.

Energy independence and raw materials

Maintaining European independence in energy, raw materials and clean‑technology sectors was a recurring theme. Von der Leyen said the EU will continue to diversify supply chains, reduce dependence on China for critical minerals and pursue partnerships that share European values.

Canada as a strategic partner

Highlighting the importance of like‑minded allies, the President noted that Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney will address the Parliament the following day. While Canada cannot join the Union, von der Leyen emphasized the desire to bring the country as close as possible to the EU because of shared democratic values and the potential to lessen reliance on Chinese resources.

Trade talks with China

Von der Leyen indicated that the EU remains open to negotiations with China aimed at reducing the current €1‑billion‑a‑day trade deficit. However, she warned that any talks must produce tangible results quickly, or the Union will be forced to consider additional steps to protect its economy.

Migration and border security

The President also touched on migration, referencing the recent crisis at Ceuta in July. She suggested that the EU border agency Frontex could play a larger role in managing such situations, balancing humanitarian concerns with the need for secure borders.

Looking ahead

Von der Leyen’s address set the tone for the EU’s policy agenda for the coming year, signaling a firm commitment to unity, resilience and cooperation with partners who share a common vision of freedom, prosperity and democratic values. The speech will likely shape legislative priorities across member states and inform future negotiations with both allies and rivals.
