Houston September Events: Bike Safety Course, Food & Wine Fest, ReadersFest and More

Houston residents looking for wholesome, family‑oriented activities this September will find plenty of options across the Heights, River Oaks, Montrose and Downtown. Below is a curated list of six events that celebrate community, faith, family and local culture.

Bicycle Safety Course

Certified instructor Justin McMurtry, a League Cycling Instructor and co‑founder of BikeHouston, will teach real‑traffic cycling skills to Montrose residents. Participants will learn intersection negotiation, lane positioning and decision‑making. The three‑part course runs on September 19 (8:30‑11:30 a.m. and 2‑5 p.m.) and September 20 (8 a.m.–noon). Cost is $45 for a single session or $95 for the full series. The class is held at the University of St. Thomas, 3807 Graustark St., Houston. More information is available at www.cyclingsavvy.org.

Chicken Wing Festival

Houston’s top wing restaurants will compete in a lively cook‑off. Attendees can enjoy live music, watch the chefs battle for the title of people’s choice favorite, and sample a complimentary tasting hosted by Saint Arnold Brewing Company for guests 21 and older.

Hands‑on Houston: 25th Birthday Celebration

The Candle Show at Asher: Off the Wall marks its 25th anniversary with a drop‑in candle‑making event. Visitors to the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft can hand‑dip their own taper candles and browse handcrafted candleholders created by renowned local artists.

Houston Food and Wine Festival

Chefs for Farmers returns for its fifth year, showcasing the city’s leading chefs and restaurants. Each day features a different lineup, offering unlimited bites, craft cocktails and premium wine and spirit pairings for a true taste of Houston’s culinary scene.

ReadersFest

Book Club Babes HTX presents a two‑day literary festival at POST Houston on September 26‑27, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. The free‑admission event includes an exclusive author panel and a bustling book market, bringing together readers, authors and local vendors. The venue is located at 401 Franklin St., Houston. Follow the festival on Instagram @readersfesthtx for updates.

A Texas Music Series

Discovery Green launches “Deep in the Heart,” a free weekly concert series throughout October. The series highlights emerging and regional Texas artists across genres such as country, Tejano, indie rock and blues, providing a family‑friendly way to enjoy live music in the heart of the city.

All events are subject to change, so please verify dates, times and any registration requirements before attending. Whether you’re a cyclist, foodie, reader or music lover, Houston’s September calendar offers something for every family and community member.
