Australian government pledges stronger telecom resilience after Optus outage

In Sydney on Sunday, the Australian government announced a plan to boost the resilience of the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure following a 76‑minute outage at Optus, the country’s second‑largest carrier. The glitch on Friday caused voice‑calling interruptions in parts of Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, and some callers reported intermittent call dropouts.

Government response

Communications Minister Anika Wells addressed the issue in a televised statement, emphasizing that no piece of infrastructure – whether roads, bridges, poles or wires – can be 100% resilient. “What we need to do is make sure these systems are as resilient as we can possibly make them,” Wells said, underscoring the administration’s commitment to protecting essential services.

Impact on emergency services

The outage raised concerns because it affected emergency‑call routing, a problem that has recurred in recent years. In 2023 a nationwide Optus failure left thousands unable to reach police, fire and ambulance services and was linked to two fatalities. The current incident, while shorter, again highlighted the critical role of telecom networks in public safety.

Regulatory background

Optus, owned by Singapore Telecommunications, has faced regulatory scrutiny. In 2024 the carrier was fined A$12 million for failing to provide reliable emergency‑call services during the 2023 outage. The company also suffered a cyber‑attack in 2022 that exposed the data of roughly 9.5 million Australians.

Next steps

The government said it will work with carriers, including Optus, to review network design, redundancy measures and emergency‑call routing protocols. While specific legislative actions were not detailed, the administration signaled that future regulations could require higher standards for network uptime and more robust backup systems.

Optus issued an apology on Saturday, describing the incident as “deeply concerning” and confirming that an investigation is underway. The carrier’s spokesperson reiterated the company’s commitment to restoring full service and improving system reliability.

Industry analysts note that the Australian telecom sector has been under pressure to modernize its infrastructure, especially as demand for mobile data and remote‑work connectivity continues to rise. Strengthening network resilience is expected to benefit not only consumers but also businesses that rely on uninterrupted communications.

For Australians who depend on reliable phone service for everyday needs and emergency situations, the government’s pledge offers reassurance that steps are being taken to prevent future disruptions.
