Wake County pastor released from ICE custody, headed to rehabilitation hospital

Wake County – Pastor Gabriel Johnson, a 55‑year‑old leader of a local congregation, was released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody on Friday, according to a statement posted by his daughter, Gabri Johnson, on Instagram.

Family says release allows focus on healing

Gabri Johnson wrote that her father’s release “does not erase what has happened or the challenges our family continues to face,” but it does give him the chance to begin the rehabilitation he desperately needs after suffering a stroke while in ICE custody.

The family explained that ICE took Pastor Johnson into custody in mid‑July following what they described as a “misunderstanding around a missed immigration appointment.” They later learned officials were pursuing his removal under a broader shift in federal immigration policy.

Background on Pastor Johnson

Born in Liberia, Pastor Johnson has lived in the United States since he was 15 and has maintained legal status, though he never became a U.S. citizen. He has served the Wake County community for years, leading worship services and community outreach programs.

Allegations of inadequate medical care

While detained, Gabri Johnson said her father was treated poorly, resulting in a stroke that left the left side of his body paralyzed. She claimed ICE was blocking his access to the rehabilitation care needed to relearn how to walk.

ICE responded in August, stating, “ICE categorically rejects the allegation that Johnson is being denied medical care. Johnson was transported to Texas Health Harris Hospital on July 30 after exhibiting stroke‑like symptoms and remains under the care of licensed medical professionals. Any suggestion that ICE is preventing Johnson from receiving necessary treatment is false. ICE does not make clinical decisions, direct treatment, or interfere with the medical judgement of doctors, nurses or hospital staff.”

Next steps for Pastor Johnson

According to the family’s Instagram post, Pastor Johnson will be moved to a 24‑hour rehabilitation hospital where medical professionals will oversee his recovery. Gabri Johnson called the release “an enormous victory,” while also expressing grief for families still living in fear of abrupt detentions.

“We pray that they, too, will see the day when their loved ones can come home,” she added.

Community response

Local faith leaders and community members have voiced support for the Johnson family, emphasizing the importance of compassionate treatment for all individuals, regardless of immigration status. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about how ICE handles detainees with serious medical conditions.
