Columbus Circle Fountain Restored in Washington, D.C.

Columbus Circle at Union Station in Washington, D.C., a key gateway for visitors arriving by train, has reopened following a significant restoration project. The $11.8 million effort, led by the National Park Service, has revitalized the historic Columbus Fountain and improved public spaces in the area.

Restoration and Improvements

The project was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. The restoration includes flowing water in the Columbus Fountain, updated brick walkways, and enhanced safety measures, making the area more welcoming for commuters and tourists alike.

The Christopher Columbus Memorial Fountain, a Beaux-Arts landmark designed by Daniel Burnham and sculpted by Lorado Taft, was originally dedicated in 1912. It stands prominently at the intersection of Delaware, Louisiana, and Massachusetts Avenues, serving as a ceremonial entrance to the capital.

Historical Significance and Recent Challenges

Columbus Circle, also known as Union Station Plaza, has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. It evolved into its current form after the installation of the Columbus monument, but faced challenges over the years, including maintenance issues that left the fountain inoperable for nearly two decades.

In 2025, Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Michael Rulli highlighted the site’s condition, leading to the introduction of the “Make Christopher Columbus Circle Great Again Act.” Their efforts, along with broader public safety and beautification measures, have contributed to the circle’s revival.

Part of a Larger Initiative

The restoration of Columbus Circle is part of a larger National Park Service initiative, which allocates over $54 million to repair several D.C. fountains and improve infrastructure ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026. The project aligns with President Trump’s initiative to enhance safety and aesthetics in the capital.

Union Station, which transitioned to direct federal oversight under the Trump administration, has also seen upgrades to rail service and facilities, further enhancing its role as a major transportation hub.
