Ambidextrous 16‑year‑old Teodor Davidov makes splash in US Open junior doubles

New York – In a standout moment for American junior tennis, 16‑year‑old Teodor Davidov stepped onto the courts of Flushing Meadows this week and immediately turned heads with a playing style few have seen at the U.S. Open. The young athlete, who can serve from either side of the net, entered the tournament on a wildcard in the junior doubles draw and, alongside teammate Tyler Lee, defeated Brazil’s Pedro Henrique Chabalgoity and Leonardo Storck Franca in the opening round.

Ambidextrous advantage

Davidov’s ability to launch serves with both his left and right hands gives him “more reach and court coverage,” he told Reuters. “I can get to more balls and create different spins,” he added, noting that opponents often find his varied angles “annoying” to return. Unlike most players who rely on a traditional two‑handed backhand, Davidov foregoes a backhand entirely, opting instead to strike every shot with the hand that best suits the situation.

Family roots of a rare talent

The teen’s ambidexterity first caught his father’s eye when Davidov was eight years old. A drill intended to improve his two‑handed backhand revealed a natural left‑handed point that, while not typical for a right‑handed youngster, proved surprisingly effective. “Slowly my dad saw that my lefty point was actually not bad for someone who isn’t lefty,” Davidov recalled. His father encouraged a more balanced approach, leading the youngster to practice left‑handed volleys and serves, eventually transitioning to a full ambidextrous game plan.

Historical context

Ambidextrous players are a rarity in professional tennis. The most notable American example is Luke Jensen, nicknamed “Dual‑Hand Luke,” who captured the French Open doubles title in 1993. Davidov joins a very small group of athletes who have attempted to build a career around using both hands on the court.

Looking ahead

While Davidov exited the junior singles competition in the first round on Sunday, his performance in doubles has already generated buzz on social media, with tournament officials highlighting his left‑and‑right serves in official highlight reels. “I want to become the best I can be,” he said, expressing confidence that his unique style could take him far in the sport.

As the U.S. Open continues, tennis fans will be watching to see whether Davidov’s ambidextrous approach can translate into deeper runs in future rounds and perhaps inspire a new generation of players to explore unconventional techniques.
