Japan reports 2.4% rise in real wages for July, biggest gain since 2021

Japan’s labour market showed a notable rebound in July, with real wages climbing 2.4% from a year earlier – the largest year‑over‑year gain since May 2021. The data, released by the Ministry of Labour, underscores a gradual recovery in pay trends after several months of steady growth.

Nominal wages and bonuses drive the surge

Average nominal wages, which include all cash earnings, rose 4.7% to 436,401 yen per month, marking the biggest jump since January 1997. Base salaries, or regular pay, increased 4.1%, the fastest rise since April 1992. Overtime pay grew 3.1%, a slight slowdown from June’s 3.4% gain. One‑time bonuses – referred to as special payments – jumped 6.3% in July, up from a 4.7% rise in June.

Inflation remains modest, supporting real‑wage growth

The ministry’s inflation gauge used to calculate real wages rose to 2.2% in July from 1.9% in June, reaching the 2% mark for the first time this year. While still below the 3.6% inflation level recorded a year earlier, the modest price increase helped lift real wages.

Implications for monetary policy

Economists see the solid wage data as a strong argument for the Bank of Japan (BOJ) to consider another interest‑rate increase at its upcoming policy meeting. BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda has already signaled that the central bank will debate further tightening in September, noting that inflationary risks appear to be rising.

Three months after its previous rate hike, the BOJ is expected to continue a gradual tightening path if wage growth remains robust and inflation stays near the 2% target.

Context and outlook

The July figures improve on June’s revised 2.2% real‑wage gain, marking the seventh consecutive month of increases. A ministry official highlighted that the combination of steady nominal‑wage growth, relatively mild inflation, and the boost from special payments all contributed to the rise.

Looking ahead, analysts will watch whether the wage momentum can sustain higher inflation pressures without sparking a cost‑of‑living squeeze for households. The BOJ’s next moves will be closely tied to how wages, prices, and global economic conditions evolve in the coming months.

Key takeaways

  • Real wages up 2.4% YoY in July – biggest gain since May 2021.
  • Nominal wages rose 4.7%, the strongest increase since 1997.
  • Special payments (bonuses) jumped 6.3%.
  • Inflation at 2.2%, still below last year’s 3.6%.
  • Data strengthens case for another BOJ rate hike in September.
