Woman Killed in Hwy 59 Crash Near Fergus Falls Highlights Holiday Road Safety Concerns

On Sunday afternoon, just before 5 p.m., a tragic two‑vehicle collision on Highway 59 claimed the life of a 51‑year‑old woman from Pelican Rapids. The crash occurred about 20 miles north of Fergus Falls, a region already seeing a surge in holiday‑weekend traffic fatalities.

What happened

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a southbound Volkswagen and a northbound Buick collided head‑on on the two‑lane highway. The driver of the Buick, identified as Basro Hassan Abokar, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Volkswagen driver, 25‑year‑old Jacob Lee Thatcher of Fergus Falls, suffered non‑life‑threatening injuries and was taken to a local emergency room.

Alcohol suspected

Investigators suspect Thatcher was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. It remains unclear whether alcohol was a factor for Abokar. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, a detail the crash report notes as a positive safety measure despite the fatal outcome.

Broader holiday‑weekend trend

This incident marks the seventh traffic‑related death in Minnesota during the Labor Day weekend travel period, a sobering reminder of the dangers that accompany increased travel. Other recent fatalities include a 69‑year‑old motorcyclist in Pine Island, an 84‑year‑old woman from Kansas in a separate crash near Kenyon, and a 61‑year‑old man on Interstate 694 in the Twin Cities.

Community response

Local officials and community leaders have called for heightened awareness about impaired driving, especially as families gather for holiday celebrations. The State Patrol urges motorists to plan ahead, avoid alcohol when behind the wheel, and use seat belts at all times.

Safety reminders

Travelers on rural highways like Hwy 59 should be prepared for changing weather conditions, limited lighting, and the presence of slower‑moving vehicles such as farm equipment. Maintaining a safe following distance, reducing speed in adverse conditions, and staying alert for oncoming traffic are essential steps to prevent further tragedies.

As Minnesota mourns another loss, the focus remains on reinforcing responsible driving habits and supporting the families affected by these heartbreaking accidents.
