Mayor Zohran Mamdani to Attend NYC 9/11 Remembrance Despite GOP Opposition

New York City – Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Friday that he will stand with New Yorkers at the city’s annual September 11 remembrance ceremony, despite a growing petition and criticism from several prominent Republicans and families of victims.

Local leaders and families voice concerns

A petition signed by relatives of 9/11 victims has amassed close to 100,000 signatures urging the mayor to stay away from the ceremony. Former Governor George Pataki and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani have publicly urged Mamdani not to attend, with Giuliani claiming on Newsmax that the mayor’s presence would be offensive and questioning his stance on the attacks.

Mayor’s rationale and recent actions

Mayor Mamdani defended his decision, saying his focus will be on “the families whose loved ones were stolen from them 25 years ago” and on honoring the first responders who risked everything on that day. He added, “I’m proud to be the mayor of this city. I love this city. I love this country.”

Last week the mayor signed two executive orders: one designating September 11 as an annual “Citywide Day of Remembrance and Service,” and another aimed at modernizing the city’s emergency‑preparedness procedures. Both orders were signed in the presence of Ramzi Kassem, the city’s chief legal counsel, whose prior representation of a convicted al Qaeda member has become a focal point of the controversy.

Security preparations and national attendance

Security for the ceremony will be heightened, with fencing and checkpoints installed around the World Trade Center site in the days leading up to the event. Vice President JD Vance is expected to attend, while President Trump will not be present.

Balancing faith, family, and public service

Mayor Mamdani, who would be the first Muslim mayor to attend the official ceremony, framed his participation as a matter of family and faith – honoring the memory of those lost while reinforcing the city’s commitment to unity and service. He declined to comment further on Giuliani’s remarks, stating simply, “I don’t have much more to add.”

Community response

Local residents and community leaders have expressed mixed reactions. Some praise Mamdani’s dedication to remembering the victims and supporting first responders, while others echo the concerns raised by Pataki and Giuliani, fearing the appointment of Kassem may send the wrong message about the city’s values.

Regardless of the debate, the ceremony will proceed as planned, with the mayor’s presence underscoring a message of resilience, gratitude, and a continued commitment to the families and heroes of September 11.
