An Austrian court has convicted a 21-year-old man, identified as Beran A., for planning an attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. The court in Wiener Neustadt delivered the verdict on Thursday, nearly two years after the plot was thwarted. The defendant, an Austrian citizen, admitted to the charges related to the concert plot during the trial’s opening last month.
Concert Plot and Cancellation
The planned attack targeted attendees outside the Ernst Happel Stadium, where tens of thousands of Taylor Swift fans had gathered for her Eras Tour. Due to the threat, Austrian authorities canceled Swift’s three performances in August 2024, leaving fans, known as Swifties, devastated. Many gathered in central Vienna to exchange friendship bracelets and support each other.
Connections to Islamic State
Prosecutors revealed that Beran A. had connections with the Islamic State group, discussing weapon purchases and bomb-making. He allegedly sought to illegally acquire weapons and pledged allegiance to the militant group. The trial also involved another defendant, Arda K., and a third man, Hasan E., who remains in pretrial detention in Saudi Arabia. They were accused of planning simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the UAE during Ramadan 2024.
Verdict and Charges
While Beran A. was the only one charged in connection with the concert plot, both he and Arda K. were found guilty of contributing to attempted murder. This charge is linked to Hasan E.’s alleged stabbing of a security officer in Mecca in March 2024, where he also wounded three other officers and a woman before his arrest.
In his final words to the court, Beran A. expressed remorse, stating, “I would just like to say that I am sorry.” The case highlights ongoing concerns about security at large public events and the influence of extremist groups.
