Hoover SRO Sergeant Brock Hardy Builds Trust with Students and Families

Hoover, Ala. – In Hoover City Schools, Sergeant Brock Hardy is turning the traditional image of police officers on its head. As the newly promoted leader of the Hoover Police Department’s school resource officer (SRO) unit, Hardy says his goal is simple: be a constant, friendly presence that students and families can rely on.

Building relationships, not fear

“We don’t want the movie version where you see us and it’s not a good day,” Hardy told local media. “We’re there every day, good or bad, to help.” He stresses that SROs should be approachable mentors, informal counselors, and problem‑solvers, not just emergency responders.

Hardy’s approach includes greeting students at morning arrival, offering a fist bump or a piece of candy, and keeping an open door for anyone who needs to talk. He teaches lessons on digital citizenship, constitutional rights and conflict resolution, and runs “Rocket Rules” for kindergarten and first‑grade students on bullying prevention, bicycle safety and when to call 911.

Trust as a safety tool

Hardy believes that trust is the foundation of school safety. When students feel comfortable reporting concerning behavior, they are less likely to become “snitches” and more likely to say, “see something, say something.” He says the SRO’s role is to listen, reassure and, when needed, connect families with the right resources.

Beyond classroom visits, Hardy’s team assists with lockdown drills, tornado and fire preparedness, and coordinates with local emergency‑management officials. He stresses that these duties are extensions of the same relationship‑building mission.

Family outreach and community ties

Hardy and his officers also meet parents at back‑to‑school events, PTO meetings and community gatherings, offering guidance on social‑media trends, online safety and other emerging concerns. By fostering trust with families, they aim to strengthen the bond with students.

“You get all walks of life here,” Hardy said. “Even though Hoover is a bigger city, our schools still feel like a small‑town community.” He credits the legacy of his father, former SRO sergeant Mac Hardy, and his grandfather, a founding member of the Hoover City Schools Board of Education, for his dedication.

Looking ahead

Hardy is also shaping the next generation of SROs as an instructor for the National Association of School Resource Officers and leads the district’s Camp Legacy program, which introduces rising sixth‑graders to leadership and officer interaction before middle school.

Captain Jeff Lowe, Hoover Police Department’s patrol captain, praised Hardy’s growth. “I was one of Mac Hardy’s students,” Lowe said. “Seeing Brock lead the unit is an amazing thing to watch.”

With a focus on daily interaction, consistent presence and faith‑guided service, Hardy’s philosophy reflects Hoover’s commitment to a safe, nurturing educational environment for every child.
