Fayetteville Police Urge Residents to Carry Narcan Amid Surge in Synthetic Opioid Overdoses

Fayetteville, N.C. – In response to a troubling increase in synthetic opioid overdoses, the Fayetteville Police Department is urging every resident to carry naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, as a lifesaving precaution.

Rising Overdose Threat in Fayetteville

Major Shawn Strepay, spokesperson for the department, explained that synthetic opioids “do not discriminate” and that a single exposure can be fatal. Over the past several months, officers have responded to a growing number of overdose calls, prompting the department to issue a public health alert.

Recent Tragedy Highlights Urgency

On Saturday, police were dispatched to a residence where three individuals were experiencing opioid overdoses. Officers administered emergency care and called emergency medical services. Despite their swift response, two of the victims died at the scene, and the third was transported to a hospital in serious condition.

“Our immediate priority is preventing the additional loss of life,” Major Strepay said. “We ask everyone in our community to take this warning seriously and to call 911 immediately if an overdose is suspected.”

How to Obtain Naloxone (Narcan)

Residents can acquire naloxone at no cost through the Cumberland County Department of Public Health, located at 1235 Ramsey Street. Local pharmacies also dispense naloxone without a prescription, making it widely accessible.

Community Action and Family Conversations

Major Strepay emphasized the importance of open, compassionate dialogue within families. “We urge friends and family members to have those difficult, but necessary, conversations with loved ones struggling with substance abuse. Warn them about this circulating danger and encourage them to seek help before it is too late,” he said.

The department is collaborating with local health providers, faith groups, and community organizations to expand outreach, education, and distribution of naloxone. By equipping more citizens with this emergency medication, Fayetteville hopes to reverse the tide of overdose deaths and protect its most vulnerable residents.

What Residents Can Do

  • Carry a naloxone kit at home, in the car, or on your person.
  • Learn how to administer the nasal spray; many pharmacies and health departments offer brief training.
  • Call 911 immediately if you suspect an overdose, even if you have administered naloxone.
  • Support loved ones by encouraging treatment and connecting them with local recovery resources.

Fayetteville’s proactive stance reflects a broader commitment to public safety and the well‑being of families across the city. By empowering citizens with lifesaving tools and fostering open conversations, the community can confront the opioid crisis head‑on.
