Pilot Butte Base Trail Section Closed Sept. 8–Oct. 9 for Stair Replacement

Bend residents who enjoy the Base Trail at Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint should plan for a temporary closure beginning Sept. 8 and lasting until Oct. 9. The closure affects the steep stair segment on the north side of the park, located just east of Pilot Butte Middle School.

Why the work is needed

The existing stair structure has shown signs of wear after years of heavy use. Oregon State Parks, working with the Deschutes Trails Coalition, will replace the stairs to improve trail safety and ensure long‑term sustainability. New fencing will surround the work zone to keep hikers out of the construction area.

Who is doing the work

The project is a joint effort between Oregon State Parks and the Deschutes Trails Coalition. The coalition will lead the stair‑replacement effort, with state park staff providing support and oversight. Funding comes from a grant awarded through the Bend Sustainability Fund, reflecting the community’s commitment to preserving local outdoor assets.

Alternative routes for hikers

While the stair segment is closed, trail users can still enjoy open portions of the Base Trail via nearby connector paths. Hikers approaching from the east can use the Larkspur Trail to bypass the work zone, and those coming from the west can access the trail near Juniper Elementary School. State park officials ask that all visitors respect the fenced area and follow posted signage.

What this means for families and outdoor enthusiasts

For families who walk the trail after school or weekend hikers seeking a scenic view of Bend, the temporary inconvenience is a small price to pay for a safer, more durable trail. The replacement stairs will accommodate a wide range of users, from casual walkers to serious hikers, and will help preserve the natural beauty of Pilot Butte for future generations.

Looking ahead

The stair‑replacement project is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 9. Once finished, the Base Trail will reopen fully, offering a refreshed, secure route for the community. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through Oregon State Parks’ website and local news outlets for any updates on the project timeline.
