Louisiana Downs launches Labor Day racing festivities with family fun and Super Derby preview

Bossier City, La. – The start of the fall racing season arrived this week at Louisiana Downs, where the track and casino opened its Labor Day celebration on Monday, Sept. 7. The event features a full slate of Thoroughbred racing, a Family Fun Zone, Food Truck Alley, and the annual Wiener Dog Charity Races, all designed to bring families together before the marquee Super Derby on Sept. 12.

Family‑focused festivities begin at 11 a.m.

Visitors entered the grandstand area to find a dedicated Family Fun Zone offering games, activities, and a safe space for children. Adjacent to the fun zone, Food Truck Alley presented a rotating selection of local vendors serving classic American fare, from barbecue to sweet treats. The Wiener Dog Charity Races kicked off at noon, allowing spectators to place a minimum $2 wager on their favorite canine contestant while supporting three local animal‑welfare groups.

Charitable cause fuels the dog races

The Wiener Dog races have become a Labor Day tradition at Louisiana Downs, according to Roxanne Tanner, the track’s director of racing. “Wiener Dog Day is synonymous with our Labor Day racing,” Tanner said. “It’s going to be fun because it’s a family‑friendly event.” All proceeds from the dog races will be split among the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana, Robinson’s Rescue, and Paws 4 Life, providing much‑needed funding for animal‑shelter operations and rescue efforts.

Thoroughbred action continues through the week

Following the morning festivities, Thoroughbred racing resumed each afternoon at 4:05 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The schedule offers a mix of stakes and allowance races, giving local bettors and racing fans ample opportunity to enjoy high‑quality competition on the track’s well‑maintained dirt surface.

Super Derby: the week’s headline event

The week’s racing schedule culminates with the 44th Louisiana Downs Super Derby on Saturday, Sept. 12. The Super Derby is one of the track’s signature events, drawing top horses, trainers, and jockeys from across the region. The race not only showcases elite equine talent but also serves as a major economic driver for the Bossier City area, attracting visitors who patronize local hotels, restaurants, and retail establishments.

Why the event matters to the community

Beyond the excitement of the sport, the Labor Day weekend at Louisiana Downs underscores the track’s role as a community hub. By pairing family‑oriented entertainment with charitable fundraising, the event reinforces the values of family, faith, and individual liberty that define the region. Local families can enjoy a safe, wholesome outing while supporting organizations that protect vulnerable animals.
