Lt. Gov. Hashmi tours Virginia to gauge public reaction to $67 B Dominion‑NextEra merger

Virginia’s lieutenant governor, Ghazala Hashmi, began a statewide listening tour this September, stopping first in Sterling’s Dreamscapes Performing Arts Center to hear what ordinary Virginians think about a proposed $67 billion merger between Dominion Energy and Florida‑based NextEra Energy. The merger would create one of the nation’s largest utility companies and could fundamentally change how electricity is delivered across the Commonwealth.

Public‑interest review requested

During a news conference before the public‑input session, Hashmi said, “We have to think about the public benefit, if there is any, with this decision. We’re talking about a proposed transaction worth roughly $67 billion that could fundamentally reshape Virginia’s largest electric utility.” She has asked the State Corporation Commission (SCC) to conduct an extended review to determine whether the deal serves the public interest.

Local residents voice cost‑concerns

Among the first speakers was Ashburn resident Vicky Hsu, who warned that the merger is unlikely to lower electricity bills for her neighborhood. “Our energy bill has doubled in the last six years, and Dominion wants to build this monster line next to the school or through the community,” Hsu said. “We are paying more and losing more to the company, which only cares about its own profit. The merger just means more power, more profit for them.”

Lawmakers join the pushback

State Senator Russet Perry, a vocal opponent of the deal, pledged to fight the merger at the SCC, stating, “In Loudoun and Fauquier counties, we do not exist to be a pass‑through state for corporate power grids.” Perry’s remarks echo a growing chorus of elected officials who fear the consolidation could give a single private entity outsized control over Virginia’s electricity supply.

Governor’s office steps in

Last month, Governor Abigail Spanberger announced she would seek intervener status in the SCC proceeding, giving her administration the ability to question both Dominion and NextEra directly. The governor’s move signals that the executive branch views the merger as a matter of statewide importance, not just a corporate transaction.

What’s at stake?

Supporters of the merger argue that combining the two utilities could bring economies of scale, modernize the grid, and attract investment for renewable‑energy projects. Critics, however, warn that a larger utility could raise rates, reduce competition, and prioritize shareholder profit over the needs of Virginia families.

Upcoming stops

Hashmi’s tour will continue through September with stops planned in Roanoke, Richmond, and Charlottesville. Each town will host a public hearing where residents can share their perspectives, ask questions, and request that the SCC scrutinize the deal closely.

Next steps

The SCC is expected to issue a preliminary decision later this year, after reviewing public comments, expert testimony, and the financial details of the proposed merger. The commission’s final ruling will determine whether the transaction can move forward or be blocked on public‑interest grounds.

Virginia voters and families watching the process are urged to stay informed, attend local hearings, and contact their representatives to ensure that any decision reflects the community’s best interests.
