The Athletic finds former NFL reporter Dianna Russini violated company standards

The Athletic, the New York Times‑owned sports outlet, completed a thorough review of former NFL reporter Dianna Russini’s work after she resigned in April amid reports of a personal relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. The investigation determined that the relationship violated the company’s standards for journalistic integrity.

Review findings

Steven Ginsberg, executive editor at The Athletic, emphasized the importance of credibility, writing, “We undertook this review to ensure the integrity of our journalism and to maintain the trust our audience places in us. Nothing is more important than our credibility.”

Mike Semel, editorial director for standards and quality, examined 903 stories, 204 podcast episodes, and 77 videos produced by Russini. While the vast majority of her reporting was unrelated to Vrabel, the review identified four items—one article and three videos—that did not meet the outlet’s standards. Editor’s notes have been added to those pieces.

Nature of the relationship

The Athletic’s report states that it did not reach a definitive conclusion about the full nature of the relationship between Russini and Vrabel. However, it found the publicly available photographs sufficient to deem a policy violation. The photos, taken in Sedona, Arizona, before the annual NFL meetings in Phoenix, show the coach and the reporter together at a resort.

Vrabel, who is married, acknowledged taking accountability for his actions but did not address the photographs directly. He stepped away from the Patriots on the third day of the NFL draft to begin counseling and returned shortly thereafter.

Russini’s response

In a statement to the Associated Press, Russini defended her career, saying, “I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published.” She added that The Athletic initially supported her, but she chose to step away “not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.”

Context and impact

The review underscores the growing scrutiny of personal relationships that could compromise journalistic objectivity, especially in high‑profile sports coverage. By adding editor’s notes to the four flagged items, The Athletic aims to preserve transparency for its readers while reinforcing its commitment to ethical reporting.

Vrabel’s coaching record remains notable; he led the Patriots to a Super Bowl appearance in February and was named AP NFL Coach of the Year in his first season in New England. The NFL itself has not opened an investigation into Vrabel’s conduct.

For local readers, the case serves as a reminder that even national sports media must adhere to the same standards of integrity expected of local news outlets. Maintaining trust through clear editorial policies protects both the audience and the credibility of the reporting institution.
