Study Finds Many Americans Willing to Take on Debt for Weight‑Loss Medication

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A new national survey reveals that a majority of Americans are prepared to make serious financial sacrifices to lose weight. The study, titled “The Price of Transformation,” asked 1,008 respondents how much they would spend and what expenses they would trim to achieve their weight‑loss objectives.

Debt, Dining Out, and Travel

Nearly six in ten participants (59%) said they would consider going into debt to purchase weight‑loss medication they believe is effective. When asked which regular expense they would cut first, the same 59% chose dining out. Subscriptions and travel also ranked high among the costs people were willing to reduce.

Willingness to Pay Long‑Term

Among current users of GLP‑1 drugs, 80% indicated they would be willing to pay for treatment for the rest of their lives if it helped them maintain their weight loss. On average, respondents said they would spend $134 per month to lower a health risk, $119 per month to lose 100 pounds, and $88 per month to meet a weight‑loss goal before a major event.

Weight Loss Tops Financial Priorities

When forced to choose a single financial priority for the year, respondents placed reaching a goal weight above building an emergency fund or paying off existing debt. The findings suggest that many Americans view weight loss as a core component of personal well‑being, on par with traditional financial goals.

The survey was conducted by market‑research firm Trimi and reflects a growing willingness among U.S. consumers to allocate significant resources toward health‑related outcomes, even at the cost of other discretionary spending.
