Lexington, KY – The Little Red Blessing Food Box, a grassroots food‑sharing program started in 2020, is launching a fundraising and volunteer drive to broaden its reach throughout Kentucky and eventually beyond state lines.
From one red box to a statewide network
During the pandemic, Cynthia Buckner created the first Little Red Blessing Food Box on Alexandria Drive to give neighbors a judgment‑free place to obtain food or drop off contributions. Since then the initiative has multiplied to ten locations across Lexington, with two additional sites under construction.
“We are up to number 10 now. We’re working on 11 and 12,” Buckner told local media. Her ambition, however, stretches far beyond a dozen boxes. Buckner envisions at least one box in each of Kentucky’s 120 counties, a goal that would require roughly 120 more units.
Funding the expansion
The program does not receive any grant money and relies entirely on private donations. “We’re really in desperate need of monetary donations because we don’t have a grant,” Buckner said. She emphasized that every contribution, big or small, helps keep the boxes stocked and ready for anyone in need.
Volunteers are essential
In addition to cash gifts, the organization is seeking volunteers to help build and maintain the boxes. “We definitely need volunteers that could help build the boxes,” Buckner explained. Volunteers will assist with assembling the wooden structures, stocking supplies, and ensuring the sites remain clean and accessible.
A judgment‑free, faith‑driven model
Each box operates on a simple principle: take what you need, leave what you can, and never ask questions. “You can just come up here and get what you need or bring stuff and then just go. We don’t ask any questions at all, but we do just ask that you don’t take the whole box,” Buckner said.
The project is rooted in Buckner’s gratitude to God for the opportunity to serve. “It’s just a joy and such a blessing that I thank God that He allowed me to be the one that He chose to do this project,” she added.
