San Antonio Food Bank Prepares for Increased Demand as Summer Approaches

The San Antonio Food Bank is experiencing a surge in demand, having recently provided assistance to an additional 22,000 people. With summer break approaching, the need for support is expected to grow even further.

Summer Challenges for Families

Eric Cooper, President and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank, highlighted the challenges families face during the summer months. As students across 29 counties, including Bexar County, are released from school, families must budget for extra childcare and groceries. Cooper noted, “Just in Bexar County, there’s about 200,000 kids that were fed at school that will now be home and hungry.”

The summer period is particularly busy for the food bank as they work to ensure children do not miss meals. Rising grocery and fuel prices add to the financial strain on families, making the food bank’s role even more crucial.

Community Support and Involvement

To address the increased demand, the San Antonio Food Bank is collaborating with school districts across Texas to prepare summer meals. These meals will be distributed to nearly 200 sites within the community. Additionally, the food bank is delivering boxes of groceries to families who sign up, helping them prepare meals for their children at home.

Cooper emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “We need food donations, we need financial support and volunteers.” The food bank’s programs rely heavily on funding, donations, and volunteer efforts to meet the growing demand.
