Despite her health challenges, Sheppeard remains a steadfast advocate for mental health awareness, impacting both her students and the wider community in Muscatine, Iowa.

Sheppeard’s commitment to mental health is evident through her creation of ‘Room 50,’ a safe space on campus where students can find solace and support. Her efforts extend beyond the classroom, as she actively participates in initiatives like the Gray Matters Collective and Phi Theta Kappa, fostering environments where students feel heard and valued.

Her influence is deeply felt by her students, as sophomore Jaylea Perez attests, ‘If it weren’t for Lori, I probably wouldn’t have continued.’ Sheppeard’s ability to listen and offer guidance has been a lifeline for many, providing them with the encouragement needed to overcome personal struggles.

Community Impact and Recognition

Sheppeard’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. She was recently honored with the Pay It Forward award by WQAD and Ascentra Credit Union, recognizing her unwavering commitment to serving others. Muscatine Community College President Naomi DeWinter praised Sheppeard, stating, ‘We want to honor all of the wonderful things you do for our students, for our community.’

Her family, including her mother, father, sister, and children, joined in celebrating her achievements. Her mother, Barb Housley, expressed pride in her daughter’s impact, saying, ‘She’s giving these kids hope.’
