Indiana Lawmakers Urged to Reject Data Center Moratoriums, Says Expert

Indiana’s push to attract artificial‑intelligence data centers hit a roadblock this week as county officials across the state considered moratoriums on new facilities. Tony Katz, a regional technology analyst, told WIBC that the growing opposition is not only “madness” but also a direct threat to American national security.

Foreign influence behind anti‑AI sentiment

Katz cited intelligence reports indicating that foreign adversaries, particularly China, are actively encouraging anti‑AI sentiment in the United States. “China is working overtime to push anti‑AI data center sentiment so they won’t be built here, so they can be built in China,” he said, framing the issue as a strategic competition rather than a purely local dispute.

Economic stakes for Hoosier communities

Data centers represent a high‑tech economic windfall for Indiana, offering high‑pay jobs, tax revenue, and ancillary business growth. Katz argued that instead of blanket bans, local governments should negotiate terms that protect community interests. He suggested requiring operators to provide on‑site power generation and to feed excess electricity back into the local grid, turning potential strain into a benefit for residents.

Addressing environmental concerns

Opponents have raised worries that cooling systems could deplete local waterways, especially the Wabash River. Katz refuted the claim, noting that modern facilities use closed‑loop cooling systems that recycle water and do not drain rivers. “It’s not going to dry out the Wabash. It’s just not true,” he emphasized.

Political dynamics at the county level

The debate has split local leaders. In Marion County, some officials have focused on ideological battles, prompting Katz to criticize what he called “progressive urban mismanagement.” He warned that while officials argue over potholes and crime, they risk missing the economic opportunity that data centers bring.

At the same time, Katz called out “dirt‑road Republicans” who reject any forward‑looking investment, saying they lack vision and strength. “Indiana business will suffer and Hoosiers will suffer because others won’t have the issues,” he warned.

Potential long‑term impact

Katz cautioned that once a moratorium is enacted, it is difficult to lift, leaving Indiana lagging behind global competitors. He framed the choice as stark: “It’s us or China. The end.” He urged lawmakers to adopt rules that enable development while safeguarding local interests, rather than outright bans that could hand technological advantage to foreign rivals.
