NC GOP House hopeful fined by Kalshi, Santos receives lifetime ban

Kalshi, a regulated prediction‑market platform, announced Monday that it has taken disciplinary action against two high‑profile political figures. Republican nominee Laurie Buckhout, the retired Army colonel running for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, was fined and suspended for betting on her own campaign. Former U.S. Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from Congress in 2023, received the platform’s first lifetime ban.

Buckhout’s self‑bet and penalty

In a statement to CNN, Buckhout admitted she placed a wager of less than $1,000 on the outcome of her own race, calling it “a dumb mistake.” She said she cooperated fully with Kalshi’s internal investigation and accepted a three‑year suspension along with a monetary fine. “I bet on myself. Literally,” Buckhout said. “It was a dumb mistake, and as soon as I learned there was an issue, I worked to make it right.”

Santos’ lifetime ban

Kalshi’s enforcement team also confirmed that former Rep. George Santos has been banned from the platform for life. The ban stems from insider bets he placed about his potential appearance at the State of the Union earlier this year. Santos, who was released from prison after a Trump commutation, responded on X with a sarcastic remark, but the platform’s decision remains firm.

Broader context for North Carolina’s 1st District

The 1st Congressional District, a largely rural area of eastern North Carolina, has become one of the nation’s most competitive House races. Democrat Rep. Don Davis has held the seat since 2023, but the district was recently redrawn by Republican state lawmakers as part of a nationwide push for GOP‑friendly maps. The Cook Political Report now rates the district as “Lean Republican,” giving Buckhout a realistic chance to flip the seat.

Buckhout, who previously lost to Davis by less than two percentage points in 2024, received an early endorsement from President Donald Trump and was named to the National Republican Congressional Committee’s “MAGA Majority” program. The program highlights candidates the party believes can turn Democratic‑held seats blue.

Reactions and implications

Democratic leaders seized on the Kalshi announcement, questioning Buckhout’s trustworthiness. Madison Andrus, spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said, “If Buckhout can’t be trusted to follow the most basic prediction‑market rules, there is no chance she can be trusted as an ethical representative for North Carolina families.”

Kalshi’s head of enforcement, Bobby DeNault, noted that while several individuals cooperated with the investigation, Santos was the only one to receive a permanent ban. The platform, which handles billions of dollars in weekly trading volume, said it remains committed to preventing insider trading and market manipulation.

What this means for voters

For constituents in the 1st District, the disciplinary actions underscore the importance of transparency and ethical conduct in campaigns. Voters will have to weigh Buckhout’s military background, Trump endorsement, and recent misstep against her policy positions as the November election approaches.

Kalshi’s partnership with CNN provides data for election coverage, but the network’s editorial staff are prohibited from trading on the platform, ensuring a clear separation between reporting and participation.
