In a celebration of local artistry, a significant collection of works by the late Tony Fitzpatrick will be auctioned at Potter & Potter in Belmont Cragin, Chicago. The auction, titled “Art & Design,” is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, both in-person at 5001 W. Belmont Ave. and online. This event presents a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts to acquire pieces from a true Chicago icon.

A Tribute to a Local Luminary

Fitzpatrick, who passed away in October at the age of 66, was a multifaceted artist known for his vibrant collages and lithographs. His works are celebrated for their intricate details and central figures, often surrounded by elements of text, tattoo imagery, and pop-culture references. Aron Packer, the auction house’s director, has curated the event to highlight Fitzpatrick’s influence, alongside works by other notable artists such as Ivan Albright and Keith Haring.

The auction features three dozen lots of Fitzpatrick’s art, including individual pieces and bundles of small prints. Notably, the collection includes “Southside Rose,” a 2005 collage featuring a central female figure, framed with matchbook covers and accompanied by a poem. This piece, with an opening bid of $5,000, is expected to sell for between $10,000 and $15,000.

Chicago’s Artistic Heritage

Fitzpatrick’s work is a testament to Chicago’s rich artistic heritage, with his creations housed in prestigious institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian. The auction also includes works by other Chicago artists, reinforcing the city’s vibrant cultural scene. Aron Packer, who has a deep connection to Chicago’s art world, emphasizes the importance of this event as a chance to own a piece of the city’s artistic legacy.

Interested bidders are encouraged to register in advance, with more information available on the Potter & Potter Auctions website. Whether attending in person or participating online, this auction offers a rare opportunity to engage with the legacy of Tony Fitzpatrick and the broader Chicago art community.
