Oklahoma City residents urged to catch final 8 p.m. sunset before daylight‑saving shift

Oklahomans, especially those in Oklahoma City, have one more chance to watch the sun dip below the horizon at exactly 8 p.m. before the clock rolls back for the season. Meteorologist Mikayla Smith of KOCO 5 confirmed that Friday, August 28, will be the final 8 p.m. sunset of the year. After that, the next sunset at that hour won’t occur until April 12, 2027.

Daylight hours shrink as fall approaches

September traditionally brings the steepest loss of daylight in the state. From the start to the end of the month, Oklahoma loses roughly 60–70 minutes of sunlight. August already saw a reduction of about 50–60 minutes. By September 1, the sunset in Oklahoma City will be at 7:56 p.m., and by month’s end it will have moved to 7:15 p.m.

Daylight‑Saving Time and the Sunshine Protection Act

The timing of these sunsets assumes that Daylight‑Saving Time (DST) will end on the night of Halloween, when clocks are set back one hour. That “fall‑back” will give trick‑or‑treaters an extra hour of evening light, but it also means that winter sunsets will occur in the 5 p.m. hour.

Congress is currently considering the Sunshine Protection Act, which has already cleared the House and now awaits a Senate vote. If the Senate approves the measure, it would be up to President Trump to sign it into law, making DST permanent across the United States. A permanent DST schedule would keep evenings lighter year‑round, a change many Oklahoma families welcome for after‑work and after‑school activities.

Local weather expertise

KOCO 5’s First Alert Weather Team, led by Chief Meteorologist Damon Lane, has been recognized by WeatheRate for providing the most accurate forecast in Oklahoma City for 14 straight years. Their consistent performance underscores the station’s commitment to reliable, community‑focused weather reporting.

Residents are encouraged to step outside this Friday evening to enjoy the last 8 p.m. sunset of 2026. Whether watching from a backyard, a local park, or a favorite spot along the Arkansas River, the brief moment offers a reminder of the natural rhythm that daylight‑saving adjustments can alter.

What’s next for the Sunshine Protection Act?

The bill’s progress in the Senate will be closely watched by Oklahoma’s families, faith communities, and business owners who rely on predictable daylight for daily schedules. A permanent DST schedule could benefit parents seeking more evening time for family meals, youth groups, and church activities, while also supporting local commerce that thrives after typical work hours.

For now, Oklahoma City’s residents can savor the sunset, note the changing clock, and stay informed about the legislative steps that could reshape daylight across the nation.
