Vietnam Leader to Visit Philippines for Trade and Security Talks

Vietnam’s President and Communist Party Chief, To Lam, is set to visit the Philippines from May 31 to June 1, as announced by Manila. This visit aims to bolster trade, security, and maritime cooperation between the two nations. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is keen on enhancing regional alliances, especially in light of China’s assertive stance in the South China Sea.

Strengthening Regional Partnerships

Under President Marcos, the Philippines has been actively seeking to expand its network of security partnerships. This aligns with recent efforts, including the country’s largest-ever multilateral defense exercises held last month. The Philippines and Vietnam, despite having overlapping claims in the South China Sea, maintain cordial relations, often engaging in joint activities such as sports matches between their navies in the Spratly Islands.

Both nations have ongoing disputes with China, which claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea. These disputes have occasionally led to standoffs with Chinese vessels. In 2024, the coast guards of Vietnam and the Philippines conducted their first joint exercises, marking a significant step in their collaborative efforts.

Regional Tour

Before arriving in the Philippines, President Lam will visit Thailand and deliver a keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue security gathering in Singapore. This tour underscores Vietnam’s strategic efforts to engage with regional partners and address shared security concerns.

Earlier in April, President Lam met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking his first overseas trip since assuming office. This meeting highlighted Vietnam’s diplomatic balancing act as it navigates its relationships with both China and other regional players.
