Las Cruces Schools Mandate Financial Literacy for All Students

In a significant move to prepare students for the complexities of modern financial life, Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS) has mandated financial literacy courses for all high school students. This initiative places LCPS among the 55 out of 89 school districts in New Mexico that require such courses, ensuring that every student gains essential financial skills.

Financial literacy education is becoming increasingly important as students face a world where digital transactions and financial decisions are more complex than ever. From understanding digital wallets to managing credit responsibly, these courses aim to equip students with the knowledge they need to succeed financially.

Research indicates that students who complete financial literacy courses are more likely to save and invest money, create budgets, and seek lower-cost credit options. This education is crucial, especially as busy schedules and other demands can make it challenging for parents to cover these topics at home.

LCPS’s decision to require financial literacy courses is a relief for many parents, as it ensures that their children will be prepared to handle financial challenges, whether they pursue college, trade school, or enter the workforce directly. The curriculum covers essential topics such as understanding student loans, building credit, and budgeting, which are vital for all career paths.

Moreover, financial literacy education has broader benefits. Students who complete these courses are less vulnerable to financial scams and exploitation and are 21% less likely to carry a credit card balance. This education also contributes to improved physical and mental health, as financial stability is closely linked to overall well-being.

Currently, 63% of New Mexico students are required to complete a financial literacy course, and advocates hope this number will continue to grow. Superintendent Nubia Tarazona of Gadsden Independent School District is scheduled to present on the importance of financial literacy to her school board, encouraging public support for making it a graduation requirement.

Mandi Torrez, the education reform director for Think New Mexico and the 2020 New Mexico Teacher of the Year, emphasizes the importance of this initiative. Think New Mexico, a results-oriented think tank, has been actively advocating for financial literacy to become a graduation requirement across all school districts.
