Researchers analyzing data from the UK Biobank have found that limiting added sugar during the first 1,000 days of life – from conception through a child’s second birthday – may help slow biological aging and lower the risk of several major cancers up to five decades later.
Study design and natural experiment
The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, examined more than 64,000 participants born between 1951 and 1956. The investigators used a natural experiment created by post‑World War II sugar rationing in Britain, which ended in September 1953. After the rationing stopped, average daily sugar consumption in the United Kingdom nearly doubled, rising from about 41 grams to 80 grams, while intake of other major foods stayed roughly the same.
Participants who were conceived and spent their early childhood under the sugar‑rationing regime were compared with those born after the policy ended. Cancer outcomes were tracked through national health records roughly fifty years later.

Zhang emphasized that the study does not advocate for eliminating sugar entirely. “Our findings support existing recommendations to limit added sugar, particularly during pregnancy and early childhood,” he said.
