Baltimore Author R.N. Swann Discusses Debut YA Thriller Set in South Dakota

R.N. Swann, a Baltimore-based author, is making waves with her debut young adult thriller, ‘In Case I Go Missing.’ The novel, set in a fictional town in South Dakota, follows best friends Fenny and Sam as they unravel the mystery behind their friend Sarah’s disappearance. This gripping tale not only delves into the suspense of a small-town investigation but also explores the deep bonds of friendship and the emotional toll of grief and betrayal.

Crafting the Story

Swann’s approach to writing this thriller was unconventional, as she revealed that she does not rely heavily on outlining or plotting. Instead, she begins with a few key scenes and allows the story to evolve organically. This method enables her to weave clues and red herrings seamlessly into the narrative, creating an immersive experience for readers.

The title ‘In Case I Go Missing’ was not the original choice. Initially, the book was called ‘Orange Sherbet,’ which later changed to ‘Where are the Walls.’ It was only after revising the manuscript and introducing the concept of Sarah’s ‘In Case I Go Missing’ binder that the current title emerged, perfectly encapsulating the essence of the story.

Inspiration and Setting

Swann’s inspiration for the setting came from her time living in Iowa City while attending the University of Iowa. Although the story was initially set in Iowa, a friend’s suggestion led her to place the fictional town of Richmand in South Dakota, a state with a stronger historical connection to gold mining, which added authenticity to the narrative.

Despite living in Baltimore for over two years, Swann’s experiences in the Midwest heavily influenced the atmospheric setting of her novel. Her move to Baltimore was prompted by a job opportunity in marketing and communications, and she has since embraced the city, enjoying local spots like Greedy Reads and Patterson Park.

Comparisons and Influences

Swann’s work has drawn comparisons to Holly Jackson’s ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,’ a comparison she welcomes as a fan of Jackson’s work. The similarities between the two novels include the investigative elements and the exploration of small-town dynamics. Swann’s admiration for Jackson’s storytelling style is evident in her own work, which combines familiar themes with fresh perspectives.

As Swann prepares for the launch of her debut novel, she reflects on the journey of becoming a published author. From the excitement of receiving her first editorial letter to the thrill of holding her advanced reader copies, Swann describes the experience as living her childhood dream. Her passion for storytelling and dedication to her craft shine through in ‘In Case I Go Missing,’ promising readers an engaging and heartfelt thriller.
