Presidential Fitness Test Returns to Iowa Schools Under New Health Initiative

In a move aimed at promoting health and fitness among young people, Iowa students aged 6-17 will once again participate in the Presidential Fitness Test. This initiative comes after Governor Kim Reynolds signed the Make America Healthy Again bill into law, following an executive order by President Trump in 2025 to reinstate the test.

Focus on Health and Longevity

The test, which had been retired for several years, is now required for Iowa students and aims to set tangible fitness goals for children. It includes exercises that focus on core, upper body, and cardio strength, with options tailored to different age groups and genders. Life Time personal trainer Nick Fey emphasizes the long-term benefits of these exercises, noting their potential to alleviate issues related to aging, such as spine and back problems. “Practicing those planks are going to really make an improvement for that as you get older,” Fey said, highlighting the importance of developing upper body strength for posture.

Challenging Yet Beneficial

Fey also pointed out that the exercises are more challenging than they might appear, suggesting that many adults would struggle to meet the standards. However, he believes that setting such standards is crucial for fostering a healthier population, especially when starting at a young age. Students who successfully complete the test will receive a certificate signed by President Trump, providing them with a sense of achievement and recognition for their efforts.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to health and wellness in schools, encouraging students to adopt healthy habits that can benefit them throughout their lives.
