Three‑year bachelor’s programs expand across 26 states, offering faster, cheaper paths to a degree

Students like Giles Sims, a 34‑year‑old web developer from Utah, are turning to three‑year bachelor’s programs to enter the workforce sooner and reduce tuition costs. Sims, who supports a wife and widowed mother, enrolled at Ensign College in Salt Lake City after being laid off, saying a four‑year commitment felt “like forever.”

Rapid growth of reduced‑credit degrees

According to nonprofit research firm RAND, 26 states now host at least one college offering a reduced‑credit, three‑year bachelor’s degree. The programs require as few as 90 credit hours, shaving a year off the traditional 120‑hour requirement.

Advocates argue the model tackles the college affordability crisis and benefits non‑traditional students juggling work and family responsibilities. Critics, including the American Association of University Professors, contend the shorter curricula may dilute the value of a college credential and create confusion for employers and graduate‑school admissions.

Accreditation and state‑licensing concerns

The shift began gaining traction after the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities approved reduced‑credit pathways at Ensign College and Brigham Young University‑Idaho in 2023. Since then, other regional accreditors have followed suit. By May, RAND counted 119 publicly announced programs.

While private nonprofit schools dominate the landscape—offering three‑quarters of the programs, often online—certain fields pose challenges. Engineering and teacher‑education degrees, which require extensive labs, practicums, or state licensure, are less amenable to compression. Only six reduced‑credit programs were found in teacher education.

Student experiences and future questions

Students report mixed feelings. Gabriella Staten, a 20‑year‑old digital‑marketing major at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, expects to save at least $20,000 but wonders how employers will view her credential. Wesley Hardy, an accounting student at Ensign, notes that CPA licensure in many states still demands 120 semester hours, potentially requiring additional coursework.

Institutions such as Indiana Wesleyan are tailoring programs to meet state licensing requirements, but prospective students are advised to verify compatibility with their home state’s regulations.

Potential impact on graduate study

Graduate schools have yet to establish standard admission practices for three‑year degree holders, leaving applicants to navigate case‑by‑case evaluations. Ensign College president Bruce Kusch believes the issue will resolve as more schools adapt, but the lack of uniform guidance remains a concern for many.

As tuition and fees continue to climb—averaging $11,950 for in‑state public students and $45,000 for private nonprofit institutions—the appeal of faster, lower‑cost pathways is likely to grow, prompting ongoing debate among educators, employers, and policymakers.
