Kayaker discovers unidentified body at Greenville Town Common

Greenville, N.C. – Early Sunday morning, a recreational kayaker on the lake at the Town Common discovered a human body near the shoreline. The discovery was made shortly after 10:30 a.m. at the park address 105 East First Street, according to the Greenville Police Department.

Police response and investigation

Officers arrived at the scene within minutes and secured the area. Preliminary observations indicated the remains belong to an adult male, though officials have not released any identifying details. Detectives are treating the case as a death investigation and have not ruled out the possibility of foul play, but they emphasized that it is too early to draw conclusions.

Investigators are collecting evidence, including photographs, witness statements, and any potential surveillance footage from nearby businesses or city cameras. The police department has asked anyone who was in the park or on the lake around the time of the discovery to contact the Greenville Police Department with any information that might assist the investigation.

Community reaction

Regular park visitors expressed shock and concern over the incident. “We come here to enjoy the outdoors and it’s unsettling to hear something like this happened in a place we consider safe,” said one frequent user of the park who asked to remain anonymous.

Local officials, including Greenville Mayor Knox White, offered condolences to the family of the deceased and assured residents that the police are working diligently to determine the cause of death. The mayor also reminded the community that the Town Common remains open, but advised caution for those using the lake until the investigation is complete.

Next steps

The police department will release additional details as they become available. In the meantime, the investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to call the Greenville Police non‑emergency line at (252) 555‑1234.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official police updates and local news outlets. The Greenville Police Department will hold a press conference later this week to provide a status report on the investigation.
