Frisco Graduation Honors Austin Metcalf with Posthumous Diploma

The graduation ceremony at Memorial High School in Frisco, Texas, on May 21 was marked by a poignant moment as Hunter Metcalf accepted a posthumous diploma for his twin brother, Austin Metcalf. The ceremony, held at the Comerica Center, saw Hunter walk the stage twice—first for his own graduation and then in honor of Austin, who was tragically killed over a year ago.

Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old junior and multi-sport athlete, lost his life on April 2, 2025, during a UIL District 11-5A championship track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco. The incident occurred following an argument with Karmelo Anthony, a student from Frisco Centennial High School. According to police reports, the altercation led to Anthony fatally stabbing Austin.

Hunter, who was present at the track meet, held his brother after the stabbing. At the graduation ceremony, the crowd stood and applauded as Hunter accepted Austin’s diploma, a gesture that underscored the community’s support and remembrance of Austin’s life and achievements.

Austin was remembered as a dedicated student and athlete, maintaining a 4.0 GPA and being voted team MVP. His aspirations included continuing his football career. In the wake of his passing, a GoFundMe campaign organized by his father, Jeff Metcalf, has raised over $578,000, reflecting the widespread support and sympathy from the community.

Legal Proceedings and Community Response

The legal case against Karmelo Anthony is ongoing, with a gag order currently in place. Anthony’s trial is set to begin on June 1, and he faces the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. Meanwhile, Anthony’s family has also garnered financial support through a GiveSendGo campaign, which has raised over $600,000. This campaign has faced scrutiny regarding the use of the funds, as it emphasizes community care and resistance against perceived injustice.

Frisco ISD continues to hold district track meets, with another event occurring in April, just over a year after the tragic incident. The community remains engaged and supportive of both the Metcalf family and the ongoing legal process, as they seek justice and healing from this heartbreaking event.
