Naperville Municipal Band Highlights Clarinetist Theo Christopherson in August “Behind the Horn” Feature

Each summer, the Naperville Municipal Band offers residents a series of free outdoor concerts that bring together musicians, families, and neighbors. In August, the band’s ongoing “Behind the Horn” series turned its spotlight to clarinetist Theo Christopherson, a University of Illinois at Urbana‑Champaign music education major who is completing his third year as an intern with the ensemble.

Student musician balances school and summer performances

Christopherson, who will begin his second year at the university this fall, is studying music education with the goal of becoming a band director. He believes that school music programs teach leadership, community building, and a standard of excellence that extends beyond the notes on a page. “Music in school teaches a lot about leadership, community building, and excellence in addition to artistry and technical ability,” he said.

He has played clarinet for eight years, beginning in middle school when his grandmother gifted him her old instrument. The familiar, mellow tone of that clarinet still accompanies him during the band’s summer concerts.

Intensive rehearsal schedule creates a unique performance environment

The Naperville Municipal Band’s summer schedule differs from a typical school band. Each Thursday night, the group presents a new piece of music, often with only a single rehearsal to prepare. “We only get one rehearsal to work on the music before we perform, so careful practicing and focus are key,” Christopherson explained.

This rapid turnaround challenges musicians to hone their craft quickly, while also offering audiences fresh repertoire week after week.

Band traditions foster community connection

Beyond the music, the band maintains several local traditions that strengthen ties to the Naperville community. Weekly Thursday concerts draw families to the park, creating a shared cultural experience. In 2025, Christopherson served as drum major for the children’s parade during the band’s kids’ concert, leading students from Neuqua Valley High School through Central Park in costume.

These events, he says, “bring everyone together in a way that’s really unique” and provide a “super cool way to bring the Naperville community together and create amazing musical experiences.”

Life outside the band

When not rehearsing or performing, Christopherson enjoys cycling with his father and cooking at home. He hopes his future career as a band director will allow him to pass on the same love of music and community to the next generation of students.

Christopherson’s story exemplifies the blend of youthful ambition, local tradition, and community spirit that the Naperville Municipal Band strives to showcase each month through “Behind the Horn.”
