Casper families have a new reason to gather outdoors this weekend. The Wyoming Symphony Orchestra (WSO) is returning to Washington Park for its annual “Pops in the Park: Broadway Under the Stars” concert on Saturday, Aug. 22. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and the program begins at 7:30 p.m.
Broadway classics under the evening sky
The evening’s repertoire features beloved songs from such shows as The Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, Les Misérables and Wicked. The WSO has partnered with Opera Wyoming to add a special element that organizers say “has to be seen – and heard – to be believed.”
From an eclipse concert to a community tradition
Music Director Jerry Hou explained that the series began nearly a decade ago when an August solar eclipse provided a unique backdrop for an outdoor performance. “We thought it would be a great time to attract new audiences,” Hou said. The eclipse concert drew a large crowd, and the positive response encouraged the orchestra to make the park concert an annual tradition.
Hou noted that the event allows the orchestra to reach listeners who might not attend its regular season concerts. “It’s a chance for us to play lighter, more popular music and engage with the Casper community in a relaxed setting,” he said.
Family‑focused atmosphere
Executive Director Melissa MacDonald said the name “Pops in the Park” reflects the event’s purpose: popular music performed in a park setting. She highlighted the family‑friendly nature of the concert, noting that attendance from families typically exceeds that of the orchestra’s indoor season.
In addition to the music, the park will host a food‑truck lineup, vendor booths and a partnership with the Children’s Entrepreneurial Market, bringing young faces and local entrepreneurship to the evening.
Practical details
Washington Park is located at 951 South Jefferson Street in Casper. Tickets are $15 per person, with family passes available for $50. Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets, lawn chairs and, if they wish, a glass of wine to enjoy while listening to the orchestra.
Organizers describe the night as “beautiful,” offering a chance for residents of all ages and backgrounds to share a live, in‑person cultural experience. “You won’t regret coming out and hearing us,” Hou added.
Why the event matters to Casper
Beyond entertainment, the concert underscores the role of the arts in strengthening community bonds. By providing an affordable, accessible cultural outing, the WSO supports families, local vendors and the city’s broader effort to promote vibrant public spaces.
Residents who plan to attend should arrive early to secure a good spot, especially if they intend to enjoy the food‑truck offerings before the concert begins. The event is expected to draw a sizable crowd, reflecting the popularity of previous years.
