San Antonio’s vibrant culinary scene is set to welcome a new addition with the opening of ‘Miles’, a cocktail bar and bistro located in the East Commerce Street corridor. The establishment is spearheaded by Matt Garcia, who recently won the CultureMap Tastemaker Award for Rising Chef of the Year. Garcia, who previously worked at GiGi’s Deli, will now take on the role of hospitality director at Miles, which opens its doors this Friday.
A New Venture in Historic St. Paul Square
Miles is situated in the historic St. Paul Square, occupying the space that was once home to Francis Bogside and later Blessed Bogside. The venue features a 360-degree central bar and a menu of small plates designed for sharing. The culinary offerings blend nostalgic comfort food with innovative, chef-driven touches. Highlighted dishes include snapper ceviche with agua chile and summer melon, a Miles burger topped with a fried egg, mayo, and white cheddar, and fried chicken accompanied by ‘sexy slaw’.
The bar menu is equally enticing, offering a selection of wines, elevated cocktails, and unique options like caviar bumps. Patrons can also enjoy a playful ‘Happy Meal’ featuring a filet ‘o fish with American cheese, tartare sauce, and pickle, served with a choice of High Life pony beer or a gin martini.
Community and Culinary Collaboration
Garcia’s decision to pause operations at GiGi’s Deli in April was a strategic move to focus on launching Miles. Once the new venture is established, Garcia plans to reopen the deli within El Tigre Coffee, owned by his business partner, Tatanka Guerrero. Guerrero, who is also the founder of Dreamers & Doers Hospitality Group, brings a wealth of experience from successful projects in cities like Miami, Los Angeles, Austin, and Marfa.
Guerrero describes Miles as ‘funky, authentic, and different’, expressing confidence that San Antonio is ready for this innovative concept. The collaboration between Garcia, Guerrero, and chef Steven Lopez promises to bring a fresh and exciting dining experience to the local community.
