Baptist Health System has announced the opening of a new emergency department at St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital, located in the South Texas Medical Center. This development aims to meet the increasing demand for stroke care in the region. As one of three hospitals in San Antonio designated as a Level I Comprehensive Stroke Center, St. Luke’s is equipped to handle the most complex stroke cases, providing specialized care around-the-clock.
Improved Accessibility and Capacity
The new emergency department addresses previous challenges with accessibility and space. The old emergency entrance was uphill and difficult to navigate, posing challenges for ambulance drivers and those dropping off patients. The new facility, located on Floyd Drive, offers a smoother drop-off site, enhancing the overall patient experience.
Vicki Gulczewski, CEO of St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital, highlighted the need for these upgrades, noting that the new 11,000 square-foot department is twice the size of the previous one. It features 10 rooms, two triage spaces, and a dedicated area for patients awaiting results, significantly increasing capacity and efficiency.
Addressing Regional Health Challenges
Dr. Fadi Al-Saiegh, a comprehensive stroke medical director at St. Luke’s, emphasized the importance of rapid care for patients experiencing ischemic strokes, where blood flow to the brain is blocked. “Any delay can negatively impact a patient’s outcome,” he explained. “With fast care, patients have a great chance of recovery.”
St. Luke’s has seen a growing number of stroke patients, often receiving transfers from rural counties lacking advanced stroke care. The prevalence of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease in Bexar County and South Texas increases the risk of stroke among residents, making the availability of advanced care crucial.
Commitment to Advanced Medical Research
In addition to providing comprehensive stroke care, St. Luke’s is involved in research trials to offer patients cutting-edge techniques and procedures. Dr. Al-Saiegh noted that these efforts aim to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients.
The new emergency department is part of Baptist Health System’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services in San Antonio. The official grand opening was held on May 13, with the facility set to open to patients in June. St. Luke’s is one of six community hospitals in San Antonio operated by Baptist Health System, owned by Tenet Healthcare.
