Man arrested after pistol-whipping victim with fake gun at gas station

San Antonio police arrested a man after an assault at a gas station west of downtown, near the intersection of South Laredo Street and South Brazos Street, late Sunday night. The incident unfolded around 9 p.m. in the 2100 block of South Laredo Street, and San Antonio Police Department officers say a fake gun was involved. SAPD reports say the suspect left the scene but returned and was taken into custody with help from the department’s EAGLE helicopter.

Officers were called to the gas station around 9 p.m. Sunday after a report of an assault, and patrol units converged on the 2100 block of South Laredo Street, a short distance from South Brazos Street. Responding crews encountered witnesses and a person who had been struck, while initial accounts indicated a brief but violent confrontation. SAPD took over the scene and began collecting statements and evidence as the situation was secured.

According to police, the suspect approached another person at the gas station and a language barrier complicated their interaction, which appears to have escalated quickly. SAPD’s account notes the exchange between the two did not progress into a prolonged dispute, but it did turn physical within moments. Officers say that barrier may have contributed to confusion and the rapid escalation that followed.

SAPD reported the suspect then pistol-whipped the victim in the back of the head using what was later described as a fake gun, a weapon that can look real but lacks firing capability. The victim broke away and ran toward a nearby restaurant, seeking shelter and help from people inside. While trying to reach safety the victim ultimately collapsed to the ground, and the attacker attempted to seize the victim’s belongings.

After the assault the suspect fled the immediate area, but SAPD says he later returned to the scene, an action that drew officers’ attention and led to the subsequent pursuit. As the suspect tried to escape again he attempted to move into a nearby creek, forcing officers to expand their perimeter to include terrain around the waterway. The return to the scene and attempt to get into the creek were key moments that allowed police to track and contain him.

Police credit air support for helping to locate and secure the suspect, noting that SAPD’s EAGLE helicopter assisted in the capture by providing an aerial vantage point. Ground units coordinated with the aviation unit to close off escape routes and take the man into custody without further incident, according to the department’s statements. The combined response ended with the suspect detained and the scene under control.

SAPD collected on-scene statements and evidence as part of their handling of the incident, and the department’s initial public account focuses on the sequence of events from the first approach to the arrest. The victim was able to get away from the immediate threat and was assisted by people at the nearby restaurant before officers arrived. The department’s involvement and deployment of air resources were decisive in resolving the situation late Sunday night.
