Jill and Jan Shropshire, two American sisters, found themselves in a predicament when the key to their room at a countryside B&B in England broke off in the lock. The sisters, who were on a backpacking trip across the UK, had been enjoying their time in the historic town of Shrewsbury, exploring its medieval buildings and picturesque streets.
The Incident
The incident occurred on their second night in the town, after they had spent the evening at a local pub, enjoying gin and tonics and chatting with the locals. Jill, who had been handling the key, accidentally broke it off in the lock, leaving them trapped in their room.
With no phone in the room and no cellphones, the sisters were forced to wait until the next morning to try and get help. However, their attempts to attract attention by yelling out the window and banging on the door were unsuccessful, and they were left to spend the day trapped in their room.
A Day of Waiting
The sisters tried to make the most of their situation, reading books and eating peanut butter from a jar they had in their room. Jan, who is a type-1 diabetic, was unable to access her insulin, but she tried not to worry and instead focused on reading and waiting for help to arrive.
It wasn’t until the evening, when they heard the sound of other guests in the corridor, that the sisters were finally able to get help. Jill immediately jumped up and started shouting and banging on the door, and they were eventually rescued by a Russian couple who were staying in the room next door.
