Where Every Clam Tells a Story: A Morning at Row 34 in Fort Point

There are oyster bars, and then there is Row 34. Tucked into Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood — a former warehouse district that now hums with galleries, breweries, and some of the city’s most interesting dining — this place has quietly become one of the most compelling seafood experiences on the Eastern Seaboard. I walked in on a gray Tuesday morning when the harbor light was doing that particular Boston thing where it turns the whole waterfront silver, and I walked out two hours later entirely convinced that I had just eaten one of the best meals of my life.

Row 34 is the creation of the team behind Island Creek Oyster Farm in Duxbury, Massachusetts, which means the shellfish program here is not just good — it is sourced with an almost obsessive commitment to provenance. The menu changes daily based on what has come in from the farm and from trusted harvesters up and down the New England coast. On the half shell, you might find a briny Duxbury beside a creamy Wellfleet beside a mineral-forward Pemaquid from Maine. The servers know every one of them by name and origin, and they talk about oysters the way a sommelier talks about wine — with genuine enthusiasm rather than rehearsed script.

But Row 34 is not just an oyster bar, and that distinction matters. The kitchen turns out a clam chowder that earns every superlative thrown at it: rich without being heavy, loaded with tender littlenecks, finished with just enough smokiness to remind you that this is New England and they have been doing this for centuries. The whole roasted fish changes with the season. The fried Ipswich clams — soft-shell, lightly battered, served with a bright tartar sauce — are the kind of thing you find yourself thinking about on the drive home.

The space itself is industrial in the best sense: exposed brick, reclaimed wood, a long marble raw bar where you can pull up a stool and watch the shuckers work with the quiet efficiency of people who are genuinely expert at what they do. Weekend brunch draws a crowd, but weekday lunches offer a more relaxed pace that lets you actually have a conversation without raising your voice.

Fort Point is easy to reach — a short walk from South Station and close to the Fort Point Channel — so there is no excuse not to linger. Grab a glass of something crisp and cold from their well-curated beer and wine list, watch the light shift over the channel through the big windows, and let an afternoon dissolve around a second dozen oysters. This is Boston at its most effortlessly excellent.

Row 34 does not shout for your attention. It simply sets the bar — literally and figuratively — and lets the product speak. In a city that takes its seafood heritage seriously, that kind of confidence is entirely earned.
