The Chicago Sky handled business at home on Friday night, defeating the Los Angeles Sparks 96-82 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago to secure a comfortable 14-point victory.
Sydney Taylor led all scorers with 19 points for Chicago, providing the offensive spark the Sky needed to pull away. Natasha Cloud was the engine of the offense in a different way, orchestrating the attack with a game-high 9 assists, while center Kamilla Cardoso dominated the glass with 11 rebounds to anchor Chicago’s interior presence.
Los Angeles was paced by veteran forward Nneka Ogwumike, who turned in a double-double performance with 18 points and a game-best 12 rebounds. Despite Ogwumike’s efforts, the Sparks could not generate enough consistent offense to keep pace with the Sky. Guard Rae Burrell led Los Angeles with 5 assists.
The Sparks’ shooting struggles were a significant factor in the outcome. Los Angeles connected on just 29 of 65 field goal attempts, good for a 45 percent clip, but their three-point shooting was particularly damaging — the Sparks went just 6-for-26 from beyond the arc, a dismal 23 percent conversion rate that left far too many possessions empty-handed. When Los Angeles did get to the free-throw line, they were more reliable, converting 18 of 23 attempts for 78 percent, but it was not nearly enough to compensate for the cold shooting from distance.
Turnovers compounded the Sparks’ shooting woes. Los Angeles coughed the ball up 17 times, with a total of 18 turnovers when team turnovers are included — a costly habit against a Chicago team that was able to capitalize and push its lead. The Sparks finished with 34 total rebounds, including just 6 on the offensive glass, limiting their second-chance opportunities throughout the night.
Chicago’s ability to control the pace, distribute the ball efficiently — evidenced by Cloud’s 9 assists — and dominate the boards through Cardoso’s 11-rebound effort proved to be the decisive combination. The Sky’s defense also made life difficult for Los Angeles, as the Sparks’ 18 total turnovers translated into easy transition opportunities for the home side.
The final margin of 14 points reflects a game that was largely in Chicago’s control, particularly as the Sparks’ three-point shooting continued to falter. With the win, the Sky strengthened their position at Wintrust Arena and handed Los Angeles a tough road loss, one that will sting given how many possessions the Sparks wasted from the perimeter. Ogwumike’s double-double was a bright spot for Los Angeles, but one player’s excellence was not enough to overcome a team-wide shooting slump and a turnover problem that proved fatal against a disciplined Chicago squad.
