Kimberly Williams-Paisley’s Marriage Tip: “Don’t Leave” — 23 Years Strong

Kimberly Williams-Paisley opened up at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood about her 23-year marriage to Brad Paisley, a health scare that changed her life, and the guidance she still leans on from industry friends. She talked about the simple rule that helped her and Brad stay the course, the romantic surprise he gave her this year, and the vocal cord battles that led to surgery and new habits. Along the way she revisited her early days on the set of Father of the Bride with Steve Martin and Diane Keaton and shared the practical advice those stars offered.

Williams-Paisley said the marriage secret is almost laughably straightforward. She recalled Jamie Lee Curtis’s line about marriage and quoted it exactly, saying that it stuck with her. “Yeah, just know there’s gonna be ups and downs and don’t give up. That was our secret.”

She and Brad Paisley still juggle busy careers, so they make time deliberately and protect it when they can. The actress said their lives ebb and flow with tours and projects, and they prioritize downtime together. Small rituals and attention to each other have mattered as much as big gestures.

One of those gestures came this year when Brad surprised her with a heartfelt letter, something she hadn’t expected. That kind of softness landed after two decades of partnership and clearly meant a lot to her. The moment underscored how the ordinary acts of love can keep a relationship anchored.

Offstage, Williams-Paisley faced a frightening health mystery that left her unable to speak above a whisper for two years. After an 18-month search for answers she was diagnosed with partial vocal cord paralysis, underwent multiple surgeries, and eventually received an implant. The process tested her patience and reshaped how she cares for herself.

Her message for people facing similar struggles is direct and personal: “Don’t give up, same advice.” While searching for a medical solution she made lifestyle changes that stuck—regular meditation, serious weightlifting, and cleaner eating. Those choices not only supported her recovery but also left her feeling “more grounded, I feel more centered, I feel like I know myself better.”

Williams-Paisley emphasized that tough moments can carry unexpected gifts, advising others to “look for those” blessings in hardship. She said the period of uncertainty pushed her into healthier routines that endured after surgery. Gratitude plays a role now; “I don’t take it for granted,” she said of her regained health.

Revisiting the early days of her career brought softer memories of mentorship on set. She described being 19 on Father of the Bride and feeling like she was launched into the business overnight, learning the basics from seasoned pros. “It was incredible. I mean, I was 19 years old, so I was shot out of a cannon, basically,” she laughed, and credited both Steve Martin and Diane Keaton for guiding her through that crash course.

Steve Martin’s practical advice stuck with her in a very modern way: “get a good therapist and that was really good advice.” Diane Keaton, she said, was someone she could speak to about anything and who made the experience feel manageable. The comic chemistry on set also left an impression—”They were hilarious, especially watching Steve Martin and Martin Short together,” she recalled—and she admitted she’d love to see the outtakes from those days.

The mix of long marriage, medical uncertainty, and old Hollywood mentorship has given Williams-Paisley a clear-eyed stance on what matters. She and Brad keep choosing each other, even when schedules collide, and she uses the lessons from her health scare to keep life intentional. Between a romantic note, steady work, and the memory of early career kindness, she paints a picture of a life rebuilt around care, humor, and discipline.
