Catholic Charities Diocese of Palm Beach is working to combat human trafficking in South Florida. Ellen Wayne, CEO and executive director of Catholic Charities Diocese of Palm Beach, discussed the organization’s efforts to support victims of human trafficking.
Understanding Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is a hidden crime that can happen to anyone, including Americans and adults. It is often cultivated through a grooming process where the perpetrator develops trust with the victim and then manipulates them into servitude or forced labor.
The Catholic Charities Diocese of Palm Beach has a program called BakiTA, which works to support victims of human trafficking. The program provides mental health counseling, medical services, and safe housing to help victims recover from their experiences.
Recognizing the Signs of Human Trafficking
There are several signs that may indicate someone is a victim of human trafficking. These include a lack of control over their own identification, scripted responses, and signs of physical abuse such as missing teeth or lack of sleep.
Catholic Charities Diocese of Palm Beach is working with local community partners, including law enforcement and healthcare providers, to identify and support victims of human trafficking.
