A proposed 765-kV transmission line project in Texas could have severe consequences for a local dairy farm and the state’s food security. The farm, Armagh Dairy, is a 5th generation certified organic dairy and creamery that could lose its organic certification if the lines are built. The project would cut the farm’s property in half, reduce usable grazing land, and expose pastures to herbicide spraying.
The issue is not just limited to this one farm, as the proposed transmission lines could seize over 70,000 acres of private land across Texas, affecting many other farms, ranches, and rural businesses. This could lead to a loss of independence, food security, and local stewardship, making America more dependent on consolidated corporate food systems and foreign supply chains.
The proposed $33 billion transmission plan could also translate into significant costs for ratepayers, with estimated annual costs of nearly $3 billion and an additional $200 per year for the average residential customer.
