All Aboard for Adventure: Riding the San Juan Skyway on Two Wheels and Four

Tucked into the heart of downtown Durango, the Durango Natural History Museum — wait, let me back up. I want to tell you about a place that stopped me cold on a Tuesday afternoon when I had an hour to kill before dinner and walked out two and a half hours later, genuinely transformed. That place is Fort Lewis Mesa Open Space, and more specifically, the crown jewel of Durango’s outdoor scene that not nearly enough visitors put on their radar: Smelter Mountain Trail.

Located just south of the city’s downtown core, Smelter Mountain sits in a part of Durango that feels simultaneously wild and wonderfully accessible. You can park along 32nd Street or access the trailhead from the south end of the Animas River corridor and be climbing switchbacks within minutes of leaving your car. There is no long drive, no shuttle, no guesswork — just a trail that gets straight to business.

The climb itself is moderate, gaining roughly 900 feet over about two miles to the summit. It sounds manageable on paper, and it is — but the views it rewards you with are anything but ordinary. From the top, you get a sweeping 360-degree panorama of the Animas Valley, the La Plata Mountains rising to the northwest, and the red-rock mesa country rolling out to the south and west. On a clear morning — and Durango gets a lot of those — you can pick out the jagged outline of the Needle Mountains to the north. It is the kind of view that makes you reach for your phone and then immediately put it back in your pocket, because you know no photo is going to do it justice.

What I love most about Smelter Mountain is the character of the trail itself. The lower sections wind through scrub oak and mountain mahogany, the sort of dense, fragrant chaparral that turns brilliant amber and rust in early October. Higher up, the terrain opens into exposed ridgeline walking with big sky above and the whole valley laid out below. Mule deer are a common sight in the early morning hours, and if you go in late spring, the wildflower display along the upper slopes is genuinely spectacular.

The trail is open year-round, and locals use it in every season. Winter hikers will find packed snow and occasional ice on the upper switchbacks — traction devices are a smart addition from December through March. In summer, go early; the exposed summit gets warm by midday. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the trail is well-marked throughout.

One practical note: there are no facilities at the trailhead, so bring water and anything else you need. The round trip typically takes between two and three hours depending on your pace, making it a perfect half-day adventure that leaves your afternoon free for exploring Durango’s downtown, which is less than a mile away.

Smelter Mountain does not show up on the glossy covers of the adventure magazines the way some of Colorado’s more famous trails do, and honestly, that is part of its appeal. This is a trail that rewards locals and curious visitors equally, offering genuine mountain experience without the crowds or the logistics of a bigger backcountry objective. If you are coming to Durango — and you should be — put this one on the list before anything else.
