Polk County public health officials are investigating Iowa’s first confirmed case of measles for the year. The case involves a vaccinated adult who picked up the disease during international travel.
A team of investigators, led by epidemiologist Zach Woods, has contacted 109 people who were potentially in the same area as the measles patient from July 1-5. The process involves phone calls and questions about vaccination status and symptoms.
Measles Investigation
Woods described the team’s work as ‘disease detective’ work, aiming to prevent further spread of the disease. The measles vaccine is the best protection against the disease, and even in breakthrough cases, symptoms are typically milder and less contagious.
Anyone concerned about exposure can fill out a form to be contacted by the health department. The case is not yet closed, and officials are continuing to monitor the situation.
