A search-and-rescue mission is underway in San Francisco Bay after a vessel with 19 people aboard caught fire near Alcatraz Island. The U.S. Coast Guard launched the mission, and local television news images showed the boat almost completely submerged with its cabin top still above water.
According to KGO television news, at least one person was killed and another person was missing. Of the 19 people aboard, 17 were rescued from the water, KGO reported, citing San Francisco fire officials. One person received cardiopulmonary resuscitation, according to KTVU television, citing the San Francisco Fire Department.
The Coast Guard said in an X post that search and rescue efforts are ongoing, and a triage area has been established ashore. The agency added that other agencies are involved in the rescue and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
