Iowa Democrats gathered at the Iowa Democratic Party’s annual Liberty and Justice Celebration, where former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg headlined the event. The party’s focus is on affordability, with candidates for governor, U.S. Senate, Congress, and statewide office emphasizing the need to reconnect with voters after disappointing results in the 2024 presidential election.
Affordability as a Key Issue
Democratic gubernatorial nominee Rob Sand vowed to veto ‘culture war’ bills, focusing instead on issues that impact all Iowans, such as affordability, the economy, public schools, and government accountability. Other candidates, including U.S. Senate candidate Josh Turek and congressional candidate Lindsay James, also emphasized the struggles of working families and the need for affordable solutions.
Buttigieg’s appearance was seen as significant, given his history in Iowa and speculation about a possible 2028 presidential campaign. However, he declined to discuss his future plans, stating that his focus remains on helping Democrats compete in the 2026 midterms.
Iowa’s Renewed Importance
The event highlighted Iowa’s renewed importance to national Democrats, with the party investing in Iowa’s campaigns and dozens of organizers working across the state. Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart noted that the party has assembled its strongest statewide ticket in a generation and is expecting additional national support as the election approaches.
Republicans, however, remain confident that Iowa will stay Republican, with Chairman Jeff Kaufmann stating that the party will work for every single vote. Despite this, Democrats argue that the event reflected growing momentum heading into one of Iowa’s most consequential election years in decades.
