University Health System is expanding to two growing areas of Bexar County, bringing much-needed healthcare services to the community. The new hospitals, one on the Northeast Side and the other on the South Side, are expected to open in 2027.
New Hospitals to Fill Healthcare Gap
The Retama Hospital, located near Retama Park, will have 167 beds, while the Palo Alto Hospital, near Texas A&M University, will have 227 beds. Both hospitals will provide primary and specialty care services, including emergency departments and operating rooms.
According to University Health spokesperson Elizabeth Allen, the new hospitals will help fill a healthcare gap in the area. “We know the northeast corridor between San Antonio and Austin is growing so fast,” Allen said. “We also looked at the numbers of our patients who come from different parts of town to the Medical Center facilities, and many of them come from the northeast neighborhoods.”
The South Side has long been considered a healthcare desert, with limited access to medical services. The new Palo Alto Hospital will help address this issue, providing much-needed healthcare services to the community.
In addition to the new hospitals, University Health has also opened primary care clinics near each location. The Wheatley Health Center is located next to the Retama Hospital, while the Por Vida Clinic is next to the Palo Alto Hospital. Both clinics are already seeing a high volume of patients, demonstrating the need for healthcare services in the area.
The expansion of the hospitals is also expected to free up more beds at University Hospital and the Medical Center for more complex and challenging cases.
