Where the Bluegrass Meets the Table: A Night at Smithtown Seafood

There is a moment, somewhere between your first sip of a cold local draft and the arrival of a gleaming bowl of she-crab soup, when you realize that Lexington has quietly become a serious food city. That moment, for me, happened at Smithtown Seafood — and I have been telling people about it ever since.

Tucked into the South Hill neighborhood at the corner of South Limestone and Winslow Street, Smithtown Seafood occupies a handsome old brick building that feels like it has always been part of the streetscape. The interior is relaxed but polished — think exposed wood, warm lighting, and the kind of open kitchen energy that makes you feel like you are part of something happening right in front of you. It is casual enough for a Tuesday dinner with friends and just elevated enough to feel like a genuine occasion.

What sets this place apart in a landlocked city is the commitment to sourcing. Chef Jonathan Lundy and his team work with trusted purveyors to bring in fresh Gulf and East Coast seafood, and the menu reflects the seasons rather than a static laminated card. On any given evening you might find perfectly seared scallops alongside a bright tomato-corn succotash, or a whole roasted fish that arrives at the table with the kind of simplicity that only works when every ingredient earns its place.

The raw bar is a destination on its own. Gulf oysters, littleneck clams, and whatever the day’s catch has delivered are displayed on crushed ice with clean, unfussy accompaniments. Order a dozen, squeeze some lemon, and take your time. The cocktail program keeps pace — citrus-forward, well-balanced drinks that complement rather than compete with delicate seafood flavors.

Vegetable sides deserve their own paragraph. Smithtown treats them as features rather than afterthoughts. Roasted beets, charred broccolini, crispy Brussels — these are dishes that hold their own on the table, which tells you a great deal about the kitchen’s priorities and skill.

The service matches the food in temperament: knowledgeable without being precious, attentive without hovering. Staff can walk you through wine pairings or explain where the oysters came from on a given night, and they do it in a way that feels like genuine enthusiasm rather than a rehearsed script.

Reservations are recommended on weekends, though the bar area welcomes walk-ins and is a perfectly fine place to settle in for a solo meal or a low-key catch-up with a friend. Parking is available on the street and in nearby lots along South Limestone.

If someone visiting Lexington for the first time asked me where to go for a dinner that captures what this city’s food scene is doing right now, Smithtown Seafood would be my answer without hesitation. It is the kind of restaurant that makes you proud of where you live — and eager to bring everyone you know through the door.
